Doubtless others could answer better then I, but let me take a shot at
this. I believe you would just add that 'ide=nodms' parameter to
/boot/grub/grub.conf. This file has entries for each available system
(just one in your case, I'm guessing), which look something like:

title Red Hat Linux...
	root (hdx,#)
	kernel /vmlinuz-#.#.## ro root=/dev/hda#

You would, I believe, put the ide parameter at the end of the kernel
line. You could also place other parameters there, too, if desired.

You should also be able to hit 'e' at the bootloader screen and enter
the parameter there, so you can test this before you actually go mucking
with the grub.conf file. You'll need your GRUB password, of course, if
you set the machine up properly. *grin*

Just out of curiosity, is this a laptop you're talking about?
