THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (20 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Linux for Beginners
by Todd Pillars

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,

http://kalamazoolinux.org/meetings/installform.html
Contact the KLUG Installmasters for more information:
installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org
 - and -
ORDER YOUR SOFTWARE HERE: http://kalamazoolinux.org/bsware

Now is the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power. KLUG
officers and volunteers recommend the current version of BS-Ware
as the best Linux distro to choose and install!

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
*************************
Todd Pillars opened up the meeting with a reminder that the
deadline for signing up for the KLUG July 4th Party has arrived.
We heard a summary from Adam Williams of the major presentations
coming up from IBM, Novell, and Ximian - see the KLUG web site
for specific dates and planned content. We heard a summary of
the news items for the Linux community that are included in these
notes (Section IV. KLUG & LINUX NEWS FLASHES). We had a new
potential member join us tonight that heard about us from Dirk
Bartley at the last A1SCS show at the fairgrounds!!! Welcome
Patrick Bodish who has been running Mandrake v9.1 for about
nine months. Nick Kissenger reported that he had to rush one
of our members to the Bronson ER tonight after they got their
finger nearly severed in the parking facility's elevator door.
Mr. Conner had serious damage to his right hand which was being
attended to by the hospital staff. We hope for a speedy and
complete recovery for our fellow KLUGite.

There were two installations going on tonight. Richard Burnau
was installing Mandrake v9.0 on a third hard drive installed in
his desktop workstation. He was already running Red Hat Linux
v7.2 from one hard drive and Window$ 98$E from another hard drive.
He was being assisted in this process by the KLUG Installmaster,
Andrew Thompson, and an experienced Mandrake v9.1 user... Patrick
Bodish! We put Patrick to work on his first night with us. :-)
It took more than one attempt to get everything progressing here.
Dirk Bartley was jumping into the fray when I last checked on the
hopeful team of Open Source distribution co-conspirators.

The second installation was really a tweak and tuning session.
William was trying to get his NetLux laptop running M$ Window$
XP Pro to connect and share with his desktop PC running BS-Ware
v9.0. Adam Williams and Dirk Bartley were activating the SaMBa
network server on the Linux box and tuning the configuration.
Perhaps William realized that he had two world class Linux network
experts helping him to perform these tasks, maybe not. No reason
to wonder if this endeavor was a success, don't doubt it!

Bruce Smith was wandering around the room with his wireless laptop
testing out the signal beaming from the new KLUG D-Link WAP that
he had just configured. Looked like we had a new Linksys hub that
was being added to the IPCop firewall box too. He looked like he
was happy with the operating results.

The rest of the room was involved in organized chaos, from humorous
story telling to esoteric technology exchanges, including the noisy
consumption of corn tortilla chips embellished with spicy salsa.
The diversity of these interactions was remarkable. Top web site
developers, network administrators, programmers, desktop application
specialists, database managers, IT consultants, project managers,
and system administrators were all freely collaborating in the
philosophical spirit of the Open Source GNU Linux model. A few of
KLUG group tonight could demonstrate all of those talents at once.
If you don't come to the KLUG meetings you are missing out on real
opportunity. Everyone has something to contribute to KLUG and you
can learn a great deal from just listening.

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Todd Pillars is the Chairperson of KLUG! His first PC
was a 1981 TRS-80 Model 3 2.03Mhz, 16K ram, 5 1/4 floppy
running TRS-DOS and QBASIC. In 1997 he started running
a web development company that hosted web sites with Red
Hat 5.2. He was named the Executive Director of Southwest
Michigan Information Technology Institute in 2003. SMITI
provides education and alternatives to proprietary OS's and
software. They supply technology to small startup companies.
He has memberships in KLUG, Chamber of Commerce, and GLIMA.
Admittedly a HUGE Detroit Red Wings fan who loves NASCAR too.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 07/08/2003
******************************************************************
Kerberos V, The New Security Standard
by Adam Williams

Kerberos V is a highly secure single sign-on technology, and
rapidly becoming the standard for corporate computers systems.
Tonight we'll see a walk through of creating a KDC (Kerberos
Domain Controller) on a standard RedHat install, as well as
setting up a workstation. Also recieving honourable mention
will be LDAP, GSSAPI, and the infamous Microsoft PAC (a
"proprietary" extension to the Kerberos protocol).

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the
network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of
hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is
also the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a
regular contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing
list, both presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

MADDOG HALL ON WORLDWIDE OPEN SOURCE MOVEMENT
"There's an article up on ZDNet summarizing an interesting speech
from Jon "Maddog" Hall about non-US open-source, as well as
protecting open-source from 'looters' - well worth a read:
'The open-source development community is an international treasure
and should be protected as such, said veteran Linux advocate Jon
"Maddog" Hall, in a talk in Birmingham, UK, that emphasized the
role of open-source software outside the United States."

STOP THE AUTOCONF INSANITY!
Any veteran GNU/Linux user has, at one point or another, run across
a package which used the autoconf/automake toolset. There is a lot
to be said in favor of this emerging standard. However, despite
these few pluses, the auto* tools are constantly a thorn in the
side of users and developers alike.

KERBEROS SUPPORT IN OPENSSH

other parties interested in the availability of Kerberos
authentication for the SSH protocol. Kerberos is a network

authentication for client/server applications by using secret-key
cryptography.

MOZILLA V1.4 RELEASED
"MozillaZine is reporting that Mozilla 1.4 has been released for
Windows, Mac OS and Linux. The new version is pretty similar to
today's Netscape 7.1, which is based on the same code, but lacks
Netscape's proprietary features. More information can be found
in the release notes. The release can be downloaded from
mozilla.org's releases page or via FTP. From here on,

(previously known by its codename, 'Buffy') for Windows, Mac
OS and Linux. The new version is based on Mozilla 1.4, which
is due out later today. Netscape 7.1 features many improvements
over 7.02 including even better CSS support, spam filters,
find-as-you-type, automatic image resizing, more customization
via about:config, Web development tools, Palm synchronization
and more. Plus, for the first time, ChatZilla (Mozilla's IRC

No less than five pro-Linux articles on the SCO/IBM legal tangle:
the FSF has made an official statement from Eben Moglen on the
issue; InformIT has an opinion piece from Nick Petreley detailing
the Sequent/IBM/kernel connection; an opinion piece from
BusinessWeek admonishes SCO to reveal code; ComputerWeekly has
an analysis on how SCO's actions are not hampering Linux growth;
and, finally, the Boston Herald has posted a Reuters piece that
theorizes the costs of a lengthy court battle could hurt SCO.

IN THE OPEN SOURCE SPIRIT WE CALL FOR MEETING SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS
Please don't make us RANT about organization needs for volunteers!
We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting Firewall"
to handle Chamber access control and security issues. The Chamber
has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG members come and
go from the meeting room each Tuesday night. Bob surely needs
help with this function which requires that you get to the meetings
early and see that the everything is locked up as the last person
leaves. This means being at the Chamber at 6:30pm and hanging
around until 10:00pm. We have other volunteer positions available
and many of these duties could be shared if you have an interest.

THE WMU COMPUTER CLUB - YAKKO IS THEIR MAIN LINUX SERVER!
The Computer Club at Western Michigan University exists to promote
a better understanding of computers for both members of the club
and members of the WMU community. This goal is achieved through
various club projects, member presentations, Linux Install Parties,
and discussions at our meetings. Do you need help getting your
computer to function properly? Are you interested in installing
Linux? Do you just want a place to hang out and have a good time?
If the answer to any of those questions or any other question is
'yes' then you should come check us out. We welcome anyone
(regardless of computer experience) who is willing to share
whatever talents they have, listen to others, and have a good
time.

KLUG NOW OWNS A NEW XGA VIDEO PROJECTOR
Adam reported that KLUG has upgraded the video projector from SVGA
to XGA!!! From 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768, it should boost presentation
viewing pleasure. This projector is well rated:
INFOCUS LP335 DLP PROJECTOR
1000 LUMEN - XGA - LP-0335-V + Extended 12 month warranty
Digital Light Processing DLP which provides sharp images under
variable lighting conditions.

Anyone know of a buyer for our 2 year old KLUG SVGA projector?
We should ask $800 for this unit and it is in excellent condition.
It has about 150 hours on a 1000 hour bulb. Works just fine.
It is an InFocus model LP425ZVB with padded carrying case.
