[KLUG Members] mkfs can one run one at a time?

I have a couple of really big arrays to format attached to the same
machine.

So on vc1 I do mkfs /dev/sdf1 and on vc2 I do mkfs /dev/sdg1

And vc1 starts mkfs-ing, and vc2 displays the mkfs banner and stops. 
Then when mkfs vc1 finishes, mkfs on vc2 kicked off.

So I tried it again, starting vc2 mkfs first, sure enough, mkfs on vc1
hung until the other mkfs finished.
