THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (20 active KLUG participants)

Lotus Domino On Linux
by Matt Engstrom,

KLUG's survey of "M$-Exchange for Linux" options continues
tomorrow with IBM's Domino/Notes solution -

"Want a top-tier groupware and collaboration package that runs on
Linux? One supported by a company with an unmatched history and
position in the IT work? Then what you want is Lotus Notes, which
now supports the Linux platform from the lowly Intel box to the
coveted iSeries. With support for a myriad applications as well
as standards such as IMAP and iCalendar, the newest Notes 6.0.2
is unrivaled in the groupware arena. So come and hear from a
Notes specialist about what this software can offer your
Enterprise, while running on everyone's favorite OS."

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
************************
Matt Engstrom, an IBM IT Sales Technical Specialist in
Messaging and Collaboration from the Minneapolis office,
arrived as expected and was welcomed to Kalamazoo by an
eager contingent of KLUGites. He presented Lotus Domino
v6.0.x - Web Application Server after having supper and
being entertained at a local eatery.

Call it a Microsoft Exchange alternative or something
better. "Not just e-mail but an application development
environment." Now this is not Open Source GPL'd software...
but it is from IBM and much of the technical information
for coders or developers is made available. IBM is the
champion of Linux and helped propel the rise in love of
the penguin people. Matt even had a couple of cool Tux
graphics. He gave an outstanding presentation of Lotus
Domino and expertly highlighted the advantages.

Matt used an IBM ThinkPad running Microsoft XP and the
KLUG XGA projector for both PowerPoint presentations. The
first slide show was an overview of what Lotus Domino is
and what functionality is envisioned when it is deployed.
The second slide show was about Lotus Domino v6.0.1 running
on Red Hat Linux v7.2 (you can also run it on SuSe v8.0).

Matt redeemed himself for displaying the Microsoft XP OS
on his laptop by popping up the familiar VMware (virtual
machine) menu and selecting Red Hat v7.2. He gave us a
live tour of the basics of Domino v6.0.1 installation,
configuration, and administration running on Red Hat.
He mentioned that he would forward his slide shows for
posting on the KLUG web server after converting them to
.PDF files. Look for them there... these should be
available over the next week.

The only serious problem about Lotus Domino/Notes is that
it only has clients for Microsoft workstations. No Linux
client is available. Only the server runs on Linux. We
can hope this situation changes but read this explanation.
Four reasons Lotus hasn't done a Linux Notes client:

This presentation will be performed by Matt Engstrom, an IBM Sr.
Systems Engineer flying in from IBM's Minneapolis office. Matt
has been working with Lotus software solutions for over six years.
He worked as a consultant in the Lotus Business Partner community for
two years, performing Lotus system administration and architecture
services to customers such as 3M, American Express, and Imation. Matt
moved to Lotus in June of 1999 and has been doing technical sales
support work since then. His areas of focus have included at times
large customers, state and local governments, and small and medium
businesses. "Matthew Engstrom" <matthew_engstrom@us.ibm.com>

OBJECT DATABASE CONNECTIVITY (ODBC)
By Erik Gillespie

ODBC is an open Application Program Interface (API) for accessing
databases of all shapes and sizes through a layer of libraries and
drivers. The API was created by Microsoft to be cross-platform.
Of course, M$ wouldn't think of writing the ports to Unix/Linux...
so enter unixODBC. unixODBC is more than a standards-compliant
port of the ODBC API to Unix platforms, it also includes many of
the enhancements Microsoft supports. So pick your favorite OS and
join me as we walk through the world of platform independent
database connectivity.

NOTE: July 21 2003 unixODBC v2.2.6 Released

Erik Gillespie is a recent graduate from Western Michigan University
with a degree in Computer Science. He has a keen interest in all
walks of software development for the PC but holds a particular joy
for graphics programming and development on non-PC platforms. When
not at his computer he can be found hanging out with friends or
spending the day with his little sister.

LINUX IN YOUR LIVING ROOM
Linux software has made good headway in undermining Microsoft in
corporate networks. Now a Silicon Valley company believes Linux
will do the same in the consumer electronics market. But here the
incumbent isn't Microsoft. It's Alameda-based Wind River Systems,
which has established itself over the past two decades as the
leader in embedded software.

IN THE OPEN SOURCE SPIRIT WE CALL FOR MEETING SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS
Please don't make us RANT about organization needs for volunteers!
We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting Firewall"
to handle Chamber access control and security issues. The Chamber
has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG members come and
go from the meeting room each Tuesday night. Bob surely needs
help with this function which requires that you get to the meetings
early and see that the everything is locked up as the last person
leaves. This means being at the Chamber at 6:30pm and hanging
around until 10:00pm. We have other volunteer positions available
and many of these duties could be shared if you have an interest.

THE WMU COMPUTER CLUB - YAKKO IS THEIR MAIN LINUX SERVER!
The Computer Club at Western Michigan University exists to promote
a better understanding of computers for both members of the club
and members of the WMU community. This goal is achieved through
various club projects, member presentations, Linux Install Parties,
and discussions at our meetings. Do you need help getting your
computer to function properly? Are you interested in installing
Linux? Do you just want a place to hang out and have a good time?
If the answer to any of those questions or any other question is
'yes' then you should come check us out. We welcome anyone
(regardless of computer experience) who is willing to share
whatever talents they have, listen to others, and have a good
time.

KLUG NOW OWNS A NEW XGA VIDEO PROJECTOR
Adam reported that KLUG has upgraded the video projector from SVGA
to XGA!!! From 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768, it should boost presentation
viewing pleasure. This projector is well rated:
INFOCUS LP335 DLP PROJECTOR
1000 LUMEN - XGA - LP-0335-V + Extended 12 month warranty
Digital Light Processing DLP which provides sharp images under
variable lighting conditions.

Anyone know of a buyer for our 2 year old KLUG SVGA projector?
We should ask $800 for this unit and it is in excellent condition.
It has about 150 hours on a 1000 hour bulb. Works just fine.
It is an InFocus model LP425ZVB with padded carrying case.
