You'll have to add a CTRL the first time to get it out of 
X-Windows mode.  i.e.   CTRL-ALT-F1

Is it actually doing anything besides running the time counter?

Is it package name it's currently installing changing, or is it 
stuck on the same package? Are the CD/HDD access light flickering?
