I'm not opposed to running a forum, but I am opposed to any division of
them community (intentional or not). I'd only be in favor of a system
that transposed mail messages to forum, from the forum to the mail
stream, etc... So an NNTP gateway makes best sense, with possibly a web
interface to the news group for those with NNTP tools/know-how.

I don't know anything about PHPNuke and haven't ever used anything
similair.

I'm skeptical of a need to re-invent the wheel. There are, IMHO, too
many tools to do the same darn thing. A well designed package can be
easily extended, it is just a matter of finding such a package. Then
those extensions can be contributed back to the project.
