I'd assume, bieng UNIX, that a trojan/worm (not really a virus) can
still exploit the weakness of a mail client and disturb, destroy, or
exploit the file the logged in user has access to.

I've glanced at OS/X's netinfo subsystem in relation to LDAP, and it is
quite a bit like NSS indicating their security model is pretty much
identical to LINUX.

For instance, on LINUX, someone really clever could encode something in
the subject like that freaks out Pango, or put something in the body
that freaks out gtkhtml, to some nefarious end.  Pretty much ANY client
is vulnerable like this.  But I suspect doing the above would be pretty
hard.

I have no idea how similair Windows Outlook and Mac Outlook are,  so it
is really hard to say the level of vulnerability. (No source).
