I've had nothing but good luck from my Nvidia cards. My 'main' box is a
gentoo 1.4_rc2 box with an Nvidia GF4 MX 440 in it, and it runs like a
dream. I haven't ever run ATI cards in my linux boxen, apart from the RAGE
Pro/IIc chipsets, and those are old...

But I have no complaints. It cranks 1280x1024@75 Hz like a champ, so I
have no issues with it. I'd recommend Nvidia, personally, but perhaps
someone's got things working swell with ATI cards, too...

I don't know if you'll be playing any games, but my card runs UT2k3 just
fine, as well as HL under wine (and HL runs at 1024x768 @ 72 fps)

Of course, my older Voodoo3 3000 is still running like a champ, too,
although playing movies is a touch slower than on my Nvidia.

As for ATI, they have some pretty cool stuff there (the one with the
remote and the translucent TV watching as you do other stuff) but I doubt
all that stuff works in linux.
