Well, switching back and forth is almost the same as having a gnome
desktop on tty1 and using alt+f2 to switch to a command line or
another window manager -- the exception being, you can just click on on
application that is running and you switch environments.
Theoretically, I could also run other windows managers but I have found
that most stuff can be run in X11.

If that doesn't fit what you mean by pragmatically, let me know.

Thanks for the offer but I can't commit to a time in the next six
months. I don't use OS X for anything but my desktop operating
environment so I can not comment much on how it differs from "true"
UNIX. As far as the command line and directory structure is concerned,
it is pretty much like any of the BSD's that are floating around out
there.

With that said, anyone who has a question about OS X (or Debian) is
free to email me. I will be happy to share what I know.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! This was in fact my biggest problem with OO -- and
it was my problem. I am ashamed to explain a the way I used to work
around this problem.
