Linux for Beginners
by Stu Gillis
THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,

Now is the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.
PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
******************************
KLUG Beginner's / Install Night was well attended despite the
near perfect weather outside. Stu handled the proceedings for
Todd Pillars who could not be the master of ceremonies tonight.
We had a recap from Andrew Thompson about his adventures at the
1st annual Penguicom in Warren, Michigan over the weekend. This
Science Fiction / Linux conference was a great opportunity for
him to meet some of the well known Linux public personalities.
These included Eric Raymond, Terry Pratchett, Pete Abrams, Illiad,
Marcel Gagné, Commander Taco, and others. He got autographs,
a chance for one-on-one discussion, and even helped Marcel Gagné
to put on a Knoppix presentation by loaning him the use of his
Linux laptop. See more about Andrew's visit and read his live
report e-mailed in from this year's Penguicom!
Dirk Bartley gave us a quick review of the low cost ($25 to $35)
thin-client computing device he purchased at the A1SCS sale at
the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds recently. It makes an impressive
LTSP device. He is hoping to find the funding for several more
of these for KLUG use as LTSP clients at meetings. A monitor and
a keyboard turn these devices into workstations when driven by
a LTSP server!
There were only two installations being attended to by the KLUG
Install Master Andrew Thompson tonight. One was on Chris' IBM
ThinkPad 600, who was installing Mandrake v9.1. That install
looked like it was successful! William has two machines and he
was trying to get BS-Ware v9 installed. One of these boxes was
a P3 500 MHz. It did not turn out so well, both of these PC's
seemed to have some problems that prevented them from successful
installs. While these installs were going on there were several
people helping Linux users with configuration and information
needs. I noticed that the first time attendees were getting lots
of attention and hearing all about the advantages of running Linux!
After a frenzy of Linux installs during the Red Hat Linux v8.0
release era... it looks like the recent release of Red Hat Linux
v9 has slowed the install requests. Is that because the installs
and configuration is just so easy that even newbies can now get
those installs up and running without the help of an experienced
Linux user? YES IT IS TRUE! Linux has hit mainstream like TNT!
The word IS out... it is not just for geeky systems administrators
and network engineers ANYMORE!!! If you have been hanging back,
jump right into the learning process now. It is a great time to
be a Linux user!!! Linux has something for everyone who computes.

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================
Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
Stu Gillis has degrees in Art(Photography) and Computer Science.
As System Administrator for Venturi Technology Partners in Kalamazoo
he manages several Linux servers, a Sun server and supports Windows
2000 clients when he can't pass the job on to his partner. His first
experience with Linux was installing RedHat 6.0 that came with a
Learn Linux in 24 hours type book on a 486DX100. That machine ran as
the family file server for 11 months untouched, until the 1.6GB HD
filled up. Stu is married with 2 teenage daughters. The Gillis
household also maintains a small zoo consisting of 2 dogs, 2 cats,
2 rabbits, a bird and varying numbers of tropical fish.

Samba III, Whats New [NETWORKING]
by Adam Williams
Samba 3.x is a revolutionary new package, providing improved
scalability, modularity, and true integration with technologies
such as LDAP, ADS, and Kerberos V. Is there a network left
without a Samba server quietly running on some subnet?

"Live From PenguiCon! - On Sat, 2003-05-03 at 17:45, Andrew
Thompson wrote: Well, I've had a chance to meet, however briefly,
with pretty much everyone I wanted here, including Eric Raymond,
Pete Abrams, Illiad and, a pleasant unexpected surprise, Marcel
Gagné, writer of the Linux Journal's Cooking With Linux column.
I asked both the Mssrs. Gagné and Raymond about speaking over in

fewer speaking engagements now because they're so exhausting,
and Marcel and his wife did comment on the length of the trip
down. However, they did seem interested."

THE MUST-FIX LIST FOR LINUX KERNEL V2.6.0
"Andrew Morton posted a lengthy list of items that need to be done
before the 2.5 development kernel tree should be turned into the
2.6 stable kernel tree. He prefaced his list by noting that 2.6.0
does not mean, "it's finished, ship it", alternatively offering,
"I'd propose that 2.6.0 means that users can migrate from 2.4.x
with a good expectation that everything which they were using in
2.4 will continue to work, and that the kernel doesn't crash,
doesn't munch their data and doesn't run like a dog. Other

802.11 WIRELESS SECURITY
"Having played around with wireless networking at home a
little bit, and then being faced with implementing a wireless
network at the office for the purposes of in-house customer
training in a cosmetically clean room (wires are ugly), I had
been thinking for some time about the best way to implement a
secure wireless networking solution. Amusingly enough, shortly
after the idea of a wireless network at the office came up, I
managed to win 802.11 Security in a raffle at the Kernel Panic
Linux Users' Group monthly meeting. The book was thoughtfully
donated (with a few others) by O'Reilly on the condition that
the recipients contribute reviews. Since I've found the book
genuinely helpful, I thought I'd let others know, and hence,
my first Slashdot book review. Hooray!" This book emphasizes
a multi-layer approach to wireless security;

OPEN SOURCE DESIGN TOOLS?
"Recently, my broadened responsibilities have me doing some
database design and modeling, and I'm happy for the new
knowledge and experience, but I'm a bit frustrated about
the tool selection. I know most of us have had plenty of
experience with at least a handful of all the wonderful
Open Source development tools out there (like GCC, GNU Make,
Subversion , and Perl to name a few). My question is this:
where are OpenSource design tools? I've tried what I could
find on SourceForge, but (as usual?) most of the projects
that sounded promising were either still in the planning
stages or seemed abandoned. Of course something which
allowed be to create nifty class charts and output them to
UML and/or SQL would be really cool, but I've yet to find
something that works (especially in Linux). What are your
favorite Open Source design tools and what do you like
about them?"

NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED
IBM has hired most of the Apache team. IBM has some major
pull on what work gets done and does not get done. In some
cases, it is frustrating, and other cases not. However,
everybody just accepts it because IBM is paying the bills
and people can do what they love. Is there an official IBM
party line at Apache? Absolutely not! It is just that none
of the Apache developers will talk negatively about IBM,
even those that do not work at IBM. So in this sense, it
already appears that Apache has been hijacked.

MYTHS OF LINUX ON THE DESKTOP
Supported versions of Linux are not free. What is basically
free (or free to copy and distribute) are consumer versions
of Linux and distributions that may be downloaded from the
Web. Enterprises that use these distributions will have to
rely on the open-source community for support. This is not
necessarily a bad thing, and enterprises in some more-remote
geographies point out that open-source support can be better
than what they've been paying vendors for.

=====================================================================
IF I HAD MY OWN DISTRO
The polish that Red Hat and Mandrake have added to their
consumer-grade Linux offerings have meant a lot to users
like me, those who use it as their main desktop OS. Finally,
these distributions are starting to look like a professional
quality operating system. One of the main problems, the way
I see it, is what I call "marketspace crowding." There are
so many distributions, so many flavors that are, when it
really boils down to it, just semi-clones of one another
with one good tool or one little tweak added or modified.
The idea of roll-your-own distribution has left the market
saturated with many similar distributions, and even those
"in the know" don't know how to properly choose a
distribution. The solution should be to make your
distribution stand out, and in order to do that, you can
take advantage of the opportunity to do some things right.

WE NEED MORE LIKE THIS: LINUXFEST NORTHWEST 2003
This community event had lectures, presentations, raffles

resounding success. It was held in the city of Bellingham,
Washington, which is about 90 miles North of Seattle and

For the past three years, LinuxFest has been held by the
Bellingham Linux Users Group (BLUG). For 2003, BLUG teamed
up with several other Linux Users Groups: the Tacoma Linux

(GSLUG), and the Kitsap Peninsula Seattle Linux Users Group
(KPLUG). The group effort made for a bigger event, with much
more publicity.
