XFree86 Direct Rendering Infrastructure depends on kernel-side Direct
Rendering Manager. do `lsmod` and look to see if module 'radeon' is
loaded.

Try ssh'ing in from another machine: the video may be frozen but you may
be able to kill -9 it from a net-side connection.

Drat. I heard that UT 2003 was NVidia only. :-(
