Samba III, What is New [NETWORKING - LanManager/Netbios]
by Adam Williams

Samba 3.x is a revolutionary new package, providing improved
scalability, modularity, and true integration with technologies
such as LDAP, ADS, and Kerberos V. Is there a network left
without a Samba server quietly running on some subnet?

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
**********************
Adam's SAMBA III presentation will be posted very soon:
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/

Adam's Toshiba running Red Hat Linux with a wireless network

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but
the network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple
of hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating
Systems. Not only does he deal with domain issues at work,
but he is also the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam
has been a regular contributor to technical discussions on
our main mailing list, both presenting and solving some of
the most challenging networking and configuration problems.

Thanks to KLUG Vice-Chairperson Stu Gillis for bringing the
cold milk and sharing his daughter's excellent gourmet
chocolate cookies!

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 05/20/2003

Documentation Generators: Doxygen
by Erik Gillespie

Tonight's presentation is about documentation generators with a
specific focus on Doxygen. Documentation generators parse comments
within source code files and create documentation about what the
source code is and does. If you program in C, C++, IDL, or Java
and hate documenting your code learn how Doxygen can help you out.
For more info on Doxygen check out http://www.doxygen.org.

Review Erik's presentation content outline at this web address:
http://yakko.cs.wmich.edu/ See the February 20, 2003 listing!

Erik Gillespie is a recent graduate from Western Michigan University
with a degree in Computer Science. He has a keen interest in all
walks of software development for the PC but holds a particular joy
for graphics programming and development on non-PC platforms. When
not at his computer he can be found hanging out with friends or
spending the day with his little sister. In addition to being the
President of the WMU Computer Club, Erik enjoyed working at a large
local software development corporation and converting their product
to the Linux platform while at WMU. His education focused on CS but
he also excelled in the study of Math and Japanese. He now works for
a local IT solution provider and produces software as an independent
developer.

IS WINDOWS 2003 SERVER REALLY FASTER THAN LINUX/SAMBA?
Microsoft claims Windows 2003 Server is twice as fast as Linux,
at least when it's used for file serving. Is it possible Microsoft
created a test that hamstrung Linux to make it appear Windows 2003
Server is faster in fileserver tests? The footnotes in the
benchmark results suggest as much.

HOW WOULD YOU ARGUE FOR OPEN SOURCE?
"I am currently working for an international corporation, and the
site I am working at was (until very recently) entirely run on
Windows. We recently purchased a Solaris server, and I am in
charge of setting it up and resetting the global UNIX standard.
The problem is that management doesn't want to install software
that does not have 24 hour, worldwide support available along
with it, yet they want the capabilities that only open source
software can provide on a UNIX platform (VNC, OpenSSH, etc..)
without spending insane amounts of money. I was wondering how
the Slashdot community deals with convincing management that
Open Source software is safe to use when creating a global
standard, and what your solutions have been to supporting
users working with open source software."

USERS REVEAL THE BENEFITS OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE
Linux is driving the open source movement in the commercial
world. All of the open source users in Ovum's survey have some
computers running Linux, and most use open source web servers.
Fifty per cent use open source products in their software
development activities, while only a few use open source
e-mail database and office products.

HOW ONE MICRO$OFT USER MADE THE SWITCH TO OPEN SOURCE
"Since 1995, my friend Tristan Louis ran his Web site TNL.net

Microsoft IIS. In late 2000, he moved to Windows 2000 and
continued to run on this until recently, when he switched to
Linux. So why did he decide to change things? Here is his
story..."

MAJOR RELEASE OF THE JARGON FILE
The Jargon File is a central part of the heritage of the Linux
and open-source movements. As we approach the File's 30th
anniversary, it is my pleasure and honor to bring the hacker
community a major new release, 4.4.0. This is a not a mere
point release, but a major revision incorporating weeks of
work. The file masters have been converted from Texinfo to
XML-Docbook; as a result,
* There is a real change-log file; you can see which entries
have been added, changed, or deleted in each release since 4.0.0.
* The new File includes cartoons and illustrations. In addition
to the Crunchly cartoons from the paper edition (the New Hacker's
Dictionary) there are other photographs and illustrations of
historical and current interest.

GOBOLINUX RETHINKS THE LINUX FILESYSTEMS
"GoboLinux is an alternative Linux distribution which redefines
the entire filesystem hierarchy. In GoboLinux we have paths such
as /Programs/XFree86/4.3/ and /System/Settings/BootScripts/Reboot."
By design, GoboLinux is quite a bit different from most Linux
distributions, and -- notably -- is a live ISO, always nice.

SUSE V8.2 -- BETTER THAN MANDRAKE FOR NEW USERS?
"I have been using SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional for two weeks now,
and it is as close to Linux desktop perfection as I have found so
far. (I know I'm not the first to say this, but I figure saying
it one more time can't hurt.) This doesn't mean it's totally perfect,
and my experience is on one particular laptop and may not be
duplicated on your hardware, but this is the first SuSE version
I have actually liked -- and the first one I've kept on my
"production" machine for any length of time."

OPEN SOURCE INITIATIVE PRESIDENT* RESPONDS TO SCO'S CLAIMS

unsupported by facts. *Eric S. Raymond

SCO LOOKS FOR LINUX COMMUNITY LINK IN DOS ATTACK
"SCO is vigorously investigating the source of the attack and the
identity of the perpetrators," said company spokesman Blake Stowell.
"This attack came within 48 hours of IBM's response to SCO's lawsuit
against IBM alleging intellectual property infringement. Given this
close proximity in time, we are carefully examining whether a link
exists between SCO's legal action and some of the Linux community
who are hostile toward SCO for asserting its legal rights."

THINKTANKS LINUX VERSION RELEASED <submitted by TAZ>
"This story from Linux Online Gaming points out that ThinkTanks,
a 3D tank combat game, is now available for Linux. The site also
has a Mac version available, with the developers telling us the
Windows version should be out before the end of the week, and this
looks like a very neat use of the GarageGames Torque engine to
create a good-looking, playable independent game on multiple
platforms.

BUILD YOUR OWN H E R F GUN???
Were you thinking nasty thoughts about the loathed "SPAM QUEEN"

down in Dunedin, Florida and wished you had a HERF GUN for use
in a drive-by digital meltdown? "Rostislav Persion from Voltage
Labs has successfully constructed a HERF gun (a device like EMP
but directional) in his home that is capable of stalling cars at
a distance and crashing computers as well. He has videos of the
device in action as it lights up LED's at a distance and triggers
motion detectors. There's also a bunch of other security stuff and
science stuff which is quite interesting and controversial, such
as cell phone tracking, mood altering audio signals, gyro guns,
and other things of this nature. The site owner was also featured
in US News Magazine and MTV for some of his work."

FIRST "MATRIX RELOADED" REVIEW
"The IMDB is reporting that the London Daily mirror has the first
review of the Matrix Reloaded. Sounds like the Wachowski borthers
have gone for an all out action movie which is a shame if true.
What I liked most about the original was the way it blended
stunning action with a subtle philosphical theme about how we
percieve reality." I'll hold judgement until the closing credits
myself.

KLUG NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO FILL SEVERAL VACANT POSITIONS
Nutrimaster and Education Director volunteer slots are still
vacant. We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting
Firewall" to handle Chamber access control and security issues.
The Chamber has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG
members come and go from the meeting room each Tuesday night.
Bob and Zac need help with this function which requires that
you get to the meetings early and see that the everything is
locked up as the last person leaves. This means being at the
Chamber at 6:30pm and hanging around until 10:00pm. We have
other volunteer positions available and many of these duties
could be shared if you have an interest. GET INVOLVED IN KLUG!
Volunteers are needed for Beginner's Nights and Installfests.
Please contact installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org for more details.
See http://kalamazoolinux.org/organize for position descriptions.
