Sheesh.  I fixed my problem, which I think was a password related problem.  
But here's what I had to do: 

1. Install glibc in the jail (from source, not copied libs - slackware 
install libs didn't work) 
2. Install static version of bash in the jail. (from source, of course)


The above two allowed me to get a real prompt (sans 'I have no name!') 
which allowed me to:

3. install passwd
4. Re-assign my password

Which allowed me to log in. Sheesh. I figured it was a password problem, 
but what a runaround to change it! (I guess doing copying from the other 
/etc/* files wasn't good enough)
