Gentlemen,

Thank you both for your informative and helpful responses.

I will be incorporating parts of both your responses into my final solution.

However, it appears that I may have some additional issues beside space in
/var to deal with on this mail server.

Moving all the rotated log files onto a different partition cut my du from
92% to 56%. However around the time I did this, I got additional user
reports that mail is still not being sent or received as expected. Since I
know that space on /var is an issue, I will address that first, then start
looking into end user reports of email problems more closely.

My new hard disk drive just arrived so, I shall plod through making that
/var on the existing system.

Perhaps I should have explicitly said the "default" RedHat 7.0 kernel
doesn't support LVM. I tend to be a bit more --verbose in my postings than
most people, so I try to keep the size of my posts down while still
including information helpful to understand the problem.

I know that upgrading the kernel and/or the OS would give me LVM, but trying
to upgrade the kernel or anything else on this box is deliberately very
difficult.

Since this is a public SMTP server, the box is running in a true DMZ (thanks
for the tip on that Adam) and is hardened with Bastille scripts with as many
cracker friendly programs removed as possible. This includes the C compiler
and lots of libraries. The goal is to make it as difficult as possibly for
crackers to compile anything in the DMZ and have it run. The trade-off is
that it is difficult for me to build or install any programs on this box.

Before I will put a box into the DMZ I go through the hardening and testing
regime, hence the more expedient resolution of the space problem is to add
the new disk to the existing box.

Thanks again for the help.

:-), I didnt say what he was doing was wrong, I was simply
contradicting the remark that said that redhat 7.0 didnt
support LVM. (and he did mention LVM first)..

Although I think he meant "7.0's default kernel does not
support LVM"..

Just giving additional alternative is all, I mean he can do whatever
he feels comfortable doing..

I mean if hes going to get a new drive to add in he may as well
just recompile the kernel with LVM, create some partitions
and copy the whole OS over to the new drive, then write lilo
to the MBR.. he just needs to make sure his LVM partitions are
as big or bigger than the initial drives partitions...
