THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (21 active KLUG participants)

Documentation Generators: Doxygen
by Erik Gillespie
Tonight's presentation is about documentation generators with a
specific focus on Doxygen. Documentation generators parse comments
within source code files and create documentation about what the
source code is and does. If you program in C, C++, IDL, or Java
and dislike documenting your code learn how Doxygen can help you
out. For more info on Doxygen check out http://www.doxygen.org.
Review Erik's presentation content outline at this web address:

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
**************************
Erik used the KLUG LTSP "thin" client attached to the KLUG SVGA
video projector running OpenOffice.org's Impress application to
present how Documentation Generators like Doxygen can be a big
help to program coders working in groups or on their own. It
was a well organized slide show and you could tell that Erik
used Doxygen and believed in its usefulness and value for those
that write software.
He also showed us one of Doxygen's .html output files using the
Mozilla browser so we could see what the commenting really looked
like. We saw examples of how to configure Doxygen with a GUI
tool called Doxywizard and the text editor method too for all
those preferring the command line control.
Erik's slide show included:
----------------------------------------------
Doxygen Details & Various Output Formats
When to use Doxygen
How Can Doxygen Help Me?
Examples of Use
Running Doxygen -> doxygen -g configfile
Setting Up the Config File Parameters
Doxywizard - GUI tool to setup the config file
Erik's Document Generator Demonstration:

Erik closed his presentation with an interesting Question
and Answer session.
Erik Gillespie is a recent graduate from Western Michigan University
with a degree in Computer Science. He has a keen interest in all
walks of software development for the PC but holds a particular joy
for graphics programming and development on non-PC platforms. When
not at his computer he can be found hanging out with friends or
spending the day with his little sister. In addition to being the
President of the WMU Computer Club, Erik enjoyed working at a large
local software development corporation and converting their product
to the Linux platform while at WMU. His education focused on CS but
he also excelled in the study of Math and Japanese. He now works for
a local IT solution provider and produces software as an independent
developer.

Google Hacks
by Ralph Worick
Everything you wanted to know about the search engine known as
Google... http://www.google.com or places to look for that
information and more! It is always my default home page on MY
browsers. The presentation will cover "Googlisms," phone
directory use, various tips & tricks, hack reference sites,
syntax tips, search engine basics, and what that "Feeling Lucky"
button is all about! A brief discussion of memes and the negative
side of Google will be included.
Ralph Worick has been working with computers since 1967 when
IBM systems filled whole buildings. In 1980 he got his first PC,
an Apple II+ with 48k and a 300 baud Hayes modem. While waiting
for the internet to be invented, he spent his time on FIDO and
Citadel86 BBS's. A Spring '80 graduate of WMU with a BBA in
accounting and BIS. He began an IT business, Interface Systems
in 1983. In 1994 he started using Linux as a member of the WMU
Computer Club. Joining KLUG in 1999, he has been the Recording
Secretary for 4 terms. He writes the weekly KLUG Meeting Notes
and has not missed a KLUG meeting in 4 years! His son, Levi
(age 8) and his Dalmatian Oksford (age 9) are the joys in his
life. Levi has a P3 and enjoys the "Tycoon" simulation series
from Microsoft the most. Oks dislikes Micro$oft.

SCO DROPS LINUX, SAYS CURRENT VENDORS MAY BE LIABLE
"Well, SCO is at it again. I just received an email from their
Developer Partner Program stating that not only are they suspending
all future sales of their own Linux product (due to the alleged
intellectual property violations), but they are also beginning to
send out this letter to all existing commercial users of Linux,
informing them that they may be liable for using Linux, a supposed
infringing product. They mentioned that they will begin using
tactics like those of the RIAA in taking action against end-users
of Linux. This seems like it will be about as successful as the
whole GIF ordeal a few years back. Where is UNISYS today? Is SCO
litigating itself into irrelevance?"

SCO TO SHOW COPIED CODE
A number of people have written this morning in regards to the
latest update in the ongoing SCO dropping Linux, with word from
LinuxJournal that SCO has broadened the implications of code
copying. A number of analyst groups have come out, however,
saying that it's fine to keep moving ahead with Linux
adoption - and there's an interesting interview with SCO's General
Manager of SCOSource.

SCO SUSPENDS LINUX SALES, TORVALDS REACTS
SCO CEO and President Darl McBride said the company is 'alerting
commercial users to the fact that legal liability for the use of
Linux by businesses may extend to end users.'

HEY SCO, SUE ME!
Yes, these people are using their 'Hey SCO, sue me' petition to
badger poor, hapless SCO. Worse, they're inviting you to join
them. If you are the kind of person who enjoys tormenting companies
that seem bent on destroying Linux, you may want to sign this
petition yourself. Who knows? Maybe you'll get lucky and SCO will
actually sue you for using Linux.

MANDRAKE, SUSE LIFT LINUX
When it comes to individual distributions of the Linux operating
system, the rising tide of open-source software and components has
lifted all ships. However, although advances in software such as
KDE (K Desktop Environment), the Mozilla Web browser and the
OpenOffice.org productivity suite are equally accessible to every
flavor of Linux, plenty of opportunity remains for Linux
distributors to differentiate their offerings through skillful
integration of these pieces.

MOZILLA FIREBIRD SOARS INTO VIEW
"Mozilla Firebird 0.6 (formerly Phoenix) is available for
download. This release features a fresh new look, a redesigned
preferences window, preliminary support for Mac OS X and much
more. Read why you should be using Mozilla Firebird and get the
latest release." I'm not exactly clamoring for a new web browser,
but it looks worth checking out.

MOZILLA'S JOY OF NAMING
"Thought the Firebird naming conflict was over? Think again! (If
you thought, "What naming conflict?", go to the back of the class
and read Slashdot's, previous coverage.) MozillaZine has got an
exclusive interview with Christopher Blizzard, mozilla.org staff
member, Red Hat employee and author of the Mozilla branding
strategy. It's one the first official statements from mozilla.org
(Mitchell Baker published a letter that she sent to the Firebird
database project admins a few days ago). As well as the interview,
MozillaZine also takes a look at some of the more recent media
coverage of the conflict, which is overwealmingly biased in favour
of the Firebird database project (who still haven't adequately
explained how it was different when they picked the same name as
the older Firebird BBS). Compare and contrast with MozillaZine's
interview of Ann Harrison of the Firebird database project."

KDE SUCCESS IN THE ENTERPRISE
"Is UNIX ready for the desktop? Display Works Inc. thinks it is!
They adopted KDE as their official desktop environment over a year
ago, and KDE::Enterprise is running an interview with IT manager
Tim Brodie over their experiences. This is a very good interview
that covers why KDE was chosen, user migration, and wish lists
for KDE. Quote: "I now see KDE taking the lead in polish and
professionalism on the desktop"."

DEATH OF INTERNET PREDICTED
"The Register has a piece analyzing several threads of Lawrence
Lessig's blog, and concluding that the Internet as we know it
is dying. For anyone who reads the majority of YRO posts, Lessig's
blog is one of the most important sites on the net." Another
submitter summed it up well: 'Lessig is predicting that the days
of the Commons of the Internet are over, and that as a result of
FCC deregulation, the concentration of digital rights in the
hands of just a few large media companies will kill the internet
for good. Even former FOX and Vivendi executive Barry Diller has
criticised the move.' We joke, but there are large elements of
truth to Lessig's dour predictions.

FEISTY ORACLE PUSHES LICENSES, LINUX
Oracle's brash CEO Larry Ellison might have resigned his board seat
at Apple, but he can still think different. For years, Oracle built
its reputation as the bulletproof database that companies just had
to deploy, price be damned. But as IT spending has slumped, so have
appetites for even more powerful databases. So Oracle has pushed
into Linux, seeking to outflank Microsoft for mid-sized businesses.

CAN OGG VORBIS CHANGE DIGITAL AUDIO?
When consumers refer to digital music, they usually mean the MP3
format. One open source organization, however, would like to
change the terms of the digital audio game. The Xiph.Org Foundation,
a non-profit dedicated to creating open source multimedia software,
has created an open source audio encoder/decoder named Ogg Vorbis.
Vorbis, part of a family of open source multimedia apps, is trying
to gain ground as a free alternative to MP3.

KLUG NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO FILL SEVERAL VACANT POSITIONS
Nutrimaster and Education Director volunteer slots are still
vacant. We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting
Firewall" to handle Chamber access control and security issues.
The Chamber has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG
members come and go from the meeting room each Tuesday night.
Bob and Zac need help with this function which requires that
you get to the meetings early and see that the everything is
locked up as the last person leaves. This means being at the
Chamber at 6:30pm and hanging around until 10:00pm. We have
other volunteer positions available and many of these duties
could be shared if you have an interest. GET INVOLVED IN KLUG!
Volunteers are needed for Beginner's Nights and Installfests.
Please contact installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org for more details.
See http://kalamazoolinux.org/organize for position descriptions.
