Adam,

The situation:
At 5:15 on his way home, the boss asked why RedHat 9 wouldn't work with his
internal modem to connect to yeachhh, AOL.
I believe that this was a RedHat 5.X box the boss took home to learn Linux
long ago and far away. Thus, it could be a hardware compatibility issue
(might be an ISA card). I have never seen the machine.
I believe the grandson blew away the working 5.2 config (before determining
modem parameters).
The boss said that the RedHat 9 install reported a generic modem but he
couldn't get RedHat 9 to talk to it.
I suggested checking /var/log/dmesg to see exactly what RedHat found.
He wrote it down.
Although I have never used it, I suggested he might try kudzu, but he hasn't
reported back what he found.
I suspect that there might be a modem configuration applet but I haven't a
clue how to get to it in RH9.
