I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (33 active KLUG participants)

Google Hacks
by Ralph Worick [aka mag00]
Everything you wanted to know about the search engine known as
Google... http://www.google.com or places to look for that
information and more! It is always my default home page on MY
browsers. The presentation will cover "Googlisms," phone
directory use, various tips & tricks, hack reference sites,
syntax tips, search engine basics, and what that "Feeling Lucky"
button is all about! A brief discussion of memes and the negative
side of Google will be included.
You can review Ralph's presentation at:
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/
PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
***************************
For 4.5 years I have attended every KLUG presentation and
written the weekly KLUG Meeting Notes to summarize what was
presented. Tonight the presenter was oddly familiar. This
was my first KLUG presentation. Using the KLUG LTSP client
powered by Red Hat running the gedit text editor and the
Mozilla browser, we got down into the details of search
engines... specifically Google!
TABLE OF MEME CONTENTS -
I. GOOGLISMS:
II. GOOGLE PHONE DIRECTORY USE:
III. MISCELLANEOUS GOOGLE TIPS & TRICKS:
IV. GOOGLE HACK REFERENCE SITES:
V. SYNTAX TIPS TO HELP YOU BOOST YOUR QUERIES:
VI. GOOGLE SEARCH BASICS
VII. SO WHAT IS THIS "FEELING LUCKY" BUTTON ALL ABOUT???
* GOOGLE WATCH - GOOGLE'S DARK SIDE CONSIDERED
* WHAT IS A MEME?
The questions were great and the volume of content made the
evening run a little longer than usual. Everyone who uses
the web should be familiar with search engines. While all
the necessary information was not covered in detail, the
sources of that information with links are listed. For a
twist on the subject we explored the concept of memes and
also the potential dark side of Google. Learning the search
syntax, available tools, and what the 3rd party Google API
hacks really are can empower everyone to get more from Google.
The presentation was based on the book released in February
of 2003 by O'Reilly.

Ralph Worick has been working with computers since 1967 when
IBM systems filled whole buildings. In 1980 he got his first PC,
an Apple II+ with 48k and a 300 baud Hayes modem. While waiting
for the internet to be invented, he spent his time on FIDO and
Citadel86 BBS's. A Spring '80 graduate of WMU with a BBA in
accounting and BIS. He began an IT business, Interface Systems
in 1983. In 1994 he started using Linux as a member of the WMU
Computer Club. Joining KLUG in 1999, he has been the Recording
Secretary for 4 terms. He writes the weekly KLUG Meeting Notes
and has not missed a KLUG meeting in 4 years! His son, Levi
(age 8) and his Dalmatian Oksford (age 9) are the joys in his
life. Levi has a P3 and enjoys the "Tycoon" simulation series
from Microsoft the most. Oks dislikes Micro$oft.

THE STANDARD KLUG BEGINNER'S PRESENTATION - LINUX BOOT CAMP!!!
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/beginner01.html
===============================================================
There may be another introductory demonstration of Gnome and
KDE by Stu Gillis and Brian Ritz. BATTLE OF THE DESKTOPS???
Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!
Todd Pillars is the Chairperson of KLUG! His first PC
was a 1981 TRS-80 Model 3 2.03Mhz, 16K ram, 5 1/4 floppy
running TRS-DOS and QBASIC. In 1997 he started running
a web development company that hosted web sites with Red
Hat 5.2. He was named the Executive Director of Southwest
Michigan Information Technology Institute in 2003. SMITI
provides education and alternatives to proprietary OS's and
software. They supply technology to small startup companies.
He has memberships in KLUG, Chamber of Commerce, and GLIMA.
Admittedly a HUGE Detroit Red Wings fan who loves NASCAR too.

SPAMASSASSIN VS. SPASTIC
SpamAssassin has emerged as the most popular antispam tool in the

crossed over into the commercial world as SpamKiller by Network
Associates, and other commercial products are also based on it.
This article is a short comparison of real world results between
two antispam tools, SpamAssassin and Spastic.

PHILOSOPHY, REALITY AND THE MATRIX
"The NYT discusses The Matrix as a reflection of American society,
the 'war on terror', political allegory and the impact of The
Matrix on contemporary philosophy. NPR provides streaming audio
conversations with Matrix thinkers, including Jake Horsley, author
of 'Matrix Warrior: Being the One'; Prof. Frances Flannery Dailey
on violence in the Matrix; and Prof. Greg Garrett, co-author of
'The Gospels Reloaded' and why he doesn't like the kind of hero

BIZARRE SCO NEWS
"Linus has commented on the SCO v. IBM suit saying "SCO is playing
it like the Raelians" and that he will withhold his judgement until
the code in question is shown in court. He has also recommended
that former slashdot editor, Chris DiBona, be appointed to a panel
offered by SCO to examine the evidence." Businessweek has an
interview with SCO's CEO. The Open Group would like to remind
everyone that SCO is only one of many in the Unix world.

LINUXTAG GIVES DESIST WARNING TO SCO GROUP
Lawyers representing the LinuxTag association have given notice to
SCO Group GmbH to desist from unfair competitive practiices. The
notice, dated Friday, May 23, maintains that SCO Group is sowing
uncertainty among the community of GNU/Linux users, developers
and suppliers. "SCO needs to stop claiming that the standard Linux
kernel violates its copyrights, or they need to lay the evidence
for their claim on the table," said LinuxTag's Michael Kleinhenz.

KLUG NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO FILL SEVERAL VACANT POSITIONS
Nutrimaster and Education Director volunteer slots are still
vacant. We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting
Firewall" to handle Chamber access control and security issues.
The Chamber has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG
members come and go from the meeting room each Tuesday night.
Bob and Zac need help with this function which requires that
you get to the meetings early and see that the everything is
locked up as the last person leaves. This means being at the
Chamber at 6:30pm and hanging around until 10:00pm. We have
other volunteer positions available and many of these duties
could be shared if you have an interest. GET INVOLVED IN KLUG!
Volunteers are needed for Beginner's Nights and Installfests.
Please contact installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org for more details.
See http://kalamazoolinux.org/organize for position descriptions.

presentation? Professional, individual, or commercial speakers
on Linux accepted. Contact programdirector@kalamazoolinux.org
