Did you install module-init-tools? They coexist with the pre-2.5.36
modutils. The m-i-t modprobe(8), say, is first in execution. If it finds
it is running before a 2.5.36 kernel, it calls the modutils version of
modprobe for you. Transparent, yet simple on the poor user.
