E-Xoops: A LAMP CMS System
by Patrick McGovern
E-Xoops is a GNU CMS (Content Management System) that uses LAMP
tools (Linux, Apache, Mysql and PHP). It can be set up for free
on some hosted web sites. Mr. McGovern will demonstrate the
benefits of a CMS and how he uses a test instance of e-xoops on
his home PC and the production instance on a web host provider.
Look for this presentation on the KLUG web site:

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
********************************
Patrick used a KLUG LTSP client terminal connected to the KLUG
XGA projector to display his information on E-Xoops & CMS. He
made his presentation slides with Impress from OpenOffice.org.
E-Xoops is an Open Source web site content management system.
E-Xoops is a descendant of PHP Nuke. The acronym stands for
E-commerce eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System [E-Xoops]
Patrick started out with a comparison between E-Xoops and the
Model T Ford. E-Xoops provides a tool for people to have a web
site with an administered content management system from Open
Source community supported software. E-Xoops employs the Linux
OS, Apache web server, MySQL database, and PHP functionality.
LAMP supports the e-xoops installation on a web server.

CMS is just a generic term for a class of applications that
allow for sharing of ideas and content without having a computer
science degree and without having to spend a lot of time with
the technical details to present your information. Each system
is different and may contain different components that allow for
ease of use in certain functions such as a built-in forum, a
survey or poll, security to certain areas based on user and group
permissions, and customization of the presentation with a simple
change in the configuration rather then low-level coding.

RED HAT'S CEO SUGGESTS WINDOWS FOR HOME USERS
"The CEO of Red Hat now says that Linux is not ready for the desktop,
but may be ready in a few more years. Curious - I'm wondering if this
is the start of a corporate only retrenchment of Linux, or just a bump
in the road to Linux having a wider desktop share?" Apropos that,
Gwobl writes "Jim Lynch, over at ExtremeTech, weighs in on the fate
of the Linux desktop, now that Red Hat has apparently turned its
attention to the enterprise and Novell is buying SUSE (to go with
Outlook clone Ximian, which it also owns). Lynch's take: Cheer them
on! The Linux world needs these strong champions. And don't overlook
Novell's networking roots. Time was, Big Red defined networking."

FEDORA PROJECT AND RED HAT DELIVER NEW LINUX PLATFORM
TO OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY
The Fedora Project is a Red Hat-sponsored and community-supported
open source project that promotes rapid development of innovative
open source software through a collaborative, community effort.
Fedora Core 1 provides a complete Linux platform built exclusively
from open source software. Available at no cost, the release serves
the needs of community developers, testers, and other technology
enthusiasts who wish to participate in and accelerate the technology
development process.

GETTING TO KNOW FEDORA CORE 1
"Fedora could (In some ways) be considered to be the 'new' Red Hat
Linux 9.x or 10 release, the not so long awaited sequel to Red Hat
Linux 9, which came out in late March 2003. However, Fedora Core 1
is not Red Hat Linux 10..."

BOOK REVIEWS: MASTERING RED HAT LINUX V9
"Mastering Red Hat Linux 9 is a huge, very complete guide to Red
Hat Linux 9. It's over 900 pages, and includes the "Publisher's
Edition" of RH9 on 2 CDs. It is written in a style which should
accommodate Linux newcomers and more experienced users alike. There
are a lot of examples, code snippets, and screenshots throughout
the book. In fact, sometimes the abundance of these tend to make
the material a little long to wade through. Experts should have no
trouble skipping over the sections they don't need, though."

PUTTING NOVELL'S SUSE PURCHASE IN PERSPECTIVE
" The editors over at NewsForge.com have combined their efforts to
put today's big news about Novell's purchase of SUSE in
perspective: what the news means in business terms and to the
Linux community, today and in the future. A good read that
includes quotes from industry insiders, IRC inhabitants, and
NewsForge.com readers." Another reader writes "This is a good
analysis piece about how Linux has become Novell's lifeline,
especially since NetWare's been dying...and post-Ximian."

VIRTUAL PC WILL RUN LINUX
Microsoft Corp. on Monday will announce the release of its Virtual
PC technology to manufacturing and that the final product will be
available to customers by the end of this year at a lower price
than the original Connectix product. The technology will run
almost any x86 operating system in a Virtual PC environment,
Huffman stressed. "So Linux can be installed on a virtual machine
on Virtual PC. There has been some misunderstanding about this:
You absolutely can run Linux in Virtual PC," she said.

WHY SCHOOLS SHOULD USE EXCLUSIVELY FREE SOFTWARE
School should teach students ways of life that will benefit society
as a whole. They should promote the use of free software just as
they promote recycling. If schools teach students free software,
then the students will use free software after they graduate.

PHP: OPEN SOURCE SCRIPTING LANGUAGE BECOMING DOMINANT
PHP, a little-known open-source scripting language, is becoming
dominant on Web sites, according to Netcraft.com, the U.K. surveyor
of the Web. And now Sun Microsystems has teamed up with a PHP
toolmaker, Zend Technologies Ltd. Netcraft says PHP is found on 52%
of the 14.5 million Apache-based Web sites that it inspected,
compared with 19.4% using Perl, another open-source language. PHP
and Perl are used to get disparate parts of a site to work together.
PHP is used particularly in building dynamic pages that are produced
in response to specific requests from a visitor.

LINDOWS IS SURPRISINGLY SUCCESSFUL
In response to my article last month about Linux dependency problems,
a reader suggested via email, "Hey dude you need to use Lindows and
let go of the anger." It just so happened that I had other reasons
for wanting to try Lindows, so I decided to follow his thoughtful
suggestion. After a week of testing, I'm a bit surprised to find
myself quite happy with Lindows. Why surprised? I had expected
Lindows.com's LindowsOS 4.0 to be simplistic, maybe stripped-down,
aimed at making Windows users comfortable. But while the KDE-based
user interface is clean and familiar, the power of Linux lurks just
below the surface.

IN THE OPEN SOURCE SPIRIT KLUG CALLS FOR MEETING SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS
Please don't make us RANT about organization needs for volunteers!
We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting Firewall"
to handle Chamber access control and security issues. The Chamber
has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG members come and
go from the meeting room each Tuesday night. Bob truly does need
help with this function which requires that you get to the meetings
early and see that everything is locked up as the meeting attendees
leave. We have several other KLUG volunteer positions available
and many of these duties could be shared if you have an interest.

THE WMU COMPUTER CLUB - YAKKO IS THEIR MAIN LINUX SERVER!
The Computer Club at Western Michigan University exists to promote
a better understanding of computers for both members of the club
and members of the WMU community. This goal is achieved through
various club projects, member presentations, Linux Install Parties,
and discussions at our meetings. Do you need help getting your
computer to function properly? Are you interested in installing
Linux? Do you just want a place to hang out and have a good time?
If the answer to any of those questions or any other question is
'yes' then you should come check us out. We welcome anyone
(regardless of computer experience) who is willing to share
whatever talents they have, listen to others, and have a good
time. http://yakko.cs.wmich.edu/
