Okay, I managed to solve this one. Turns out the incredibly enormous
Ximian Desktop installation neglected to pull down the nautilus-printers
package, which was thankfully available through Red Carpet. I don't know
why it wasn't automatically installed in the first place, but if this
followup saves one other person a few hours of grief, it'll be worth it.
