I am setting up a Debian desktop at home for linux desktop/testing use.
(I need to play with ldap oh boy)

I tried out the new beta installer which detected my hardware and ran
MUCH smoother than the woody install I was trying. So this installed
Sarge. I am trying to get KDE going but I am getting a mess of errors
from apt.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

This is followed by a whole series of just about every KDE package out
there. I have added the KDE site to my sources
(download.kde.org/stable/3.1.4/Debian) and I am still having these
problems. Any ideas? In the meantime I do have WindowMaker running on it.

Second, I am trying to find a small IM client. I have GAIM, but it just
seems bulky. On my windows machine I run a really small theme for
Trillian and I would love to find something similiar. Any suggestions
for IM clients out there?

Thanks

Rick
