I've not tried the new installer.

Possible, but see below.

Big question: what package or metapackage (a dummy package whose only
function is to depend on and install other packages) failed to install?

Don't add the KDE package site. Debian carries 3.1.3 KDE itself.

deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US sid/non-US main contrib non-free

Adding the KDE site as well may only cause problems. While I can't claim
that a fresh install of Debian's KDE packages won't run into dependency
problems, as I already have it installed, my current installation is
working fine.

bitlbee is a neat package that presents an IRC server view to you,
running bitchx or XChat, and integrates your several IM accounts on the
other. If you use IRC, it's one less app to run.
