Did X hang or the actual system? Could you Ctrl-Alt-F1 to change
virtual consoles?
It has been a really long time since I've had a non-Compaq/HP Linux
system actually hang-up/crash, but XFree86 does still get wigged out
occasionaly on some systems (for reasons difficult to determine).

If you can VC change to a console tail /var/log/messages and
XFree86.0.log; and check the kernel rung buffer by running "dmesg".
