It simply isn't possible to support both.  GNOME spent a great deal of
effort on backend stuff like gconf, bonobo, etc... and used serious core
infrastructure (CORBA).  KDE went for the UI and end-user features, thus
it seemed to evolve faster.  I think we are already seeing GNOMEs
investment in foundational technologies start to turn the tables; Mono
and the Bonobo/UNO [the Open Office API model] bridge will only
accelerate this.
