For a stage1 install I believe you only need the 'basic' CD, which is in
its own subdirectory:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/x86/1.4/livecd/basic/

for example. When I installed Gentoo I downloaded CD 1 and that seemed
to have everything that the 'basic' CD had and more.

The 'basic' CD has all of the tools to setup a NIC, setup your
partitions, and then you download everything else that you need from
there. Since those are basically the steps to a stage1 install I think
the 'basic' CD is preferred for stage1 installs, otherwise you're just
downloading stuff you won't use.

As for my experience, I went through the install, it was very easy, then
when I got it installed my cousin needed a computer with Windows so I
toosed that on instead. So I didn't get to use Gentoo a whole lot but
the installation was very easy. The documentation is great too and the
Gentoo-specific config files are also very well commented.
