THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (26 active KLUG participants)

Win32 Administration With Linux
by Adam Williams

The combination of Linux, Samba, and common scripting languages
can be powerful tools in managing Win32 (NT, 2K, XP) workstations.
Learn how to remotely reboot, backup, virus scan, and interrogate
workstations as well as invoke and schedule processes. And all
from a Microsoft free desktop.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
*************************
Find the Content of Adam's Win32 Admin with Linux Presentation at:
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations/

Adam used his Toshiba laptop running Impress on Red Hat v9 and
the KLUG XGA projector to present how Samba v3.x and the Remote
Procedure Call (RPC) command can empower a network administrator
with control of your Win32 workstations remotely over the network...
from the command line. Anyone want to use GTK and make a GUI?

Adam gave us the background and context of his presentation in
the first few slides. He said this information does not apply
to Win9x or v3.11 systems... only NT4, 2000, and above. He
showed us some basic syntax detail of Name Resolution, Session
Information, and SID's. We saw RPCCLIENT command options that can
let you do everything from adding shares to rebooting the remote
Win32 computer. He mentioned how much he likes to invoke this
command! You can imagine that being able to reboot a Microsoft
computer on the network remotely can really have value. Daily?

There were questions answered on the fly during the slides
and at the end of the session. Practically everyone has to
deal with computers on a network that utilize the proprietary
and buggy Microsoft Operating System and flawed applications.
Learning all about RPCCLIENT seemed to be just what attendees
had been looking for. How to integrate network administration
across Linux and Microsoft platforms effectively and remotely.

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the
network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of
hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging networking
and configuration problems. Adam is known as an LDAP wizard in
the global Linux community and has written a classic piece that
explains how it works and what is necessary to get LDAP functional.
He is also part of the early core of organizers and nurturers of
KLUG and has served as Program Director for many years, providing
the content of KLUG's world class educational meetings each week.
The Eloquent Master of Ceremonies and originator of the legendary
KLUG GEEK JEOPARDY EXTRAVAGANZA provides stellar answers in search
of those categorized Linux culture focused questions.
BE THERE OR ELSE!!! OCTOBER 28th IS THE PARTY DATE!!!

KRAP IS A KLUG PROJECT TO SECURE THE WAP AT THE CHAMBER
KLUG Restricted Access Point Project... is making progress!
NoCatAuth was discussed at the initial meeting and installed by
Bruce Smith and is awaiting final tweaking and implementation.
The pathetic looking PC that was used will handle the job.
DESCRIPTION: NoCatAuth is the perl-based authenticating
captive portal. You use an authenticating captive portal to
control access to your 802.11 access point.
(similar to what WAP providers Starbucks/T-Mobile might employ).

LINUX TURNS 12 YEARS OLD THIS MONTH
Almost despite himself, Linus Torvalds started a revolution in
September of 1991 with the first version of his Linux kernel
software. Since that portentious moment, Linux has grown to be
an international economic force. Linux, a broad term that has
evolved to represent both the core programming development code
and the rapidly proliferating variety of operating system software
and software programs, has achieved remarkable success in both
educational and corporate environments, and has grown tremendously
in popularity since the release of version 0.01 in September 1991.
Linux software has garnered tremendous international interest (and
controversy) due to its revolutionary development model (the open
source software development model), which removes the proprietary
constraints from the software code, and allows users to freely
download, copy and make changes to the software.

LINUX V2.6.0 KERNEL: REAL-TIME BENCHMARKS
"This whitepaper at LinuxDevices.com includes benchmarks comparing
the real-time performance of the vers. 2.4 and 2.6 linux kernels,
based on LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux 5.0 beta. The graphs compare the
results for average and worst-case measurements of both interrupt
response and task switch performance for the two kernels, running
on a 1GHz Pentium III under relatively heavy load. Check it out --
there's an enormous improvement."

GNOME V2.4 RELEASED
"Gnome 2.4 will be released today. Here is the link to the article
on Ars Technica. GNOME 2.4 is the result of quite a bit of work
toward complying with the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines (HIG),
which mainly focus on user interface consistency and predictability.
This release has also undergone some general polish, and it can
finally be said that the GNOME 2 platform has achieved maturity
with this release. The Epiphany web browser, a major new component
of GNOME, also makes its debut with this release."

Database, has been released. It is now available in source and binary
form for a number of platforms from our download pages

GNOPPIX: BOOTABLE GNOME CD
"While KNOPPIX has been around for some time, the GNOPPIX project has
only recently made its first release. The main difference is that it
lets you boot into the GNOME desktop environment. Usually forks are
more trouble than they're worth, but given the limits of what you can
compress onto a single CD, separate projects makes sense to me."

VERISIGN MIGRATING 2,000 SERVERS TO RED HAT LINUX
VeriSign (verisign.com) announced plans yesterday to migrate over
2,000 servers to the Red Hat (redhat.com) Enterprise Linux platform.
The migration to Linux has begun with VeriSign’s naming and directory
services business unit and the deployment of Oracle on Linux for
various corporate applications.

IS MICROSOFT REALLY LESS EXPENSIVE THAN LINUX?
Of course, it’s not shocking that a study commissioned by Microsoft
should demonstrate the advantages of that company’s products over
Linux, but the fact that the study was commissioned at all is
revealing of the big company’s concern. The popularity of Linux—fueled
by fear of placing too much control in the hands of a single
(notoriously aggressive) vendor and by the widespread conviction that
open source software can save you a bucket of money—is rising like the
waters of the flood toward the software fortress that Gates built.
IDC, a sister company to CXO Media, recently reported that sales of
Linux servers now exceed those of Windows servers, and Gartner tells
us that while the sale of servers running Windows is up 30 percent
this year over last, the sale of Intel servers running Linux is up
nearly 60 percent in that same time frame. In short, it’s a very good
time for Bill Gates to pull out his checkbook and order up some market
research.

DESKTOP LINUX SAVINGS OVERSTATED?
First, mainframe Linux is not as good as Windows 2003, then it's
more expensive to develop Linux apps than Windows'. Now comes a new
Gartner study (not paid for by Microsoft) that says Linux on the
desktop is an expensive proposition.

=====================================================================
THE RISE OF LINUX
There is no denying Linux's popularity: In VARBusiness' own surveys,
we found it is being used by roughly 20 percent of all corporations--
twice that of the respective shares of NetWare and Unix. In addition,
Gartner reports that Linux can cost less to deploy on desktops and
can deliver fewer than three-year paybacks. Also, 43 percent of
midmarket companies Gartner surveyed said they plan to increase their
use of Linux in the coming year.

IN THE OPEN SOURCE SPIRIT KLUG CALLS FOR MEETING SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS
Please don't make us RANT about organization needs for volunteers!
We need additional volunteers to act as the "Meeting Firewall"
to handle Chamber access control and security issues. The Chamber
has asked us to safeguard their assets as KLUG members come and
go from the meeting room each Tuesday night. Bob truly does need
help with this function which requires that you get to the meetings
early and see that everything is locked up as the meeting attendees
leave. We have several other KLUG volunteer positions available
and many of these duties could be shared if you have an interest.

THE WMU COMPUTER CLUB - YAKKO IS THEIR MAIN LINUX SERVER!
The Computer Club at Western Michigan University exists to promote
a better understanding of computers for both members of the club
and members of the WMU community. This goal is achieved through
various club projects, member presentations, Linux Install Parties,
and discussions at our meetings. Do you need help getting your
computer to function properly? Are you interested in installing
Linux? Do you just want a place to hang out and have a good time?
If the answer to any of those questions or any other question is
'yes' then you should come check us out. We welcome anyone
(regardless of computer experience) who is willing to share
whatever talents they have, listen to others, and have a good
time. http://yakko.cs.wmich.edu/

Anyone know of a buyer for our 2 year old KLUG SVGA projector?
We should ask $800 for this unit and it is in excellent condition.
It has about 150 hours on a 1000 hour bulb. Works just fine.
It is an InFocus model LP425ZVB with padded carrying case.
