As follow-up:

MPR and pipedreams.org sends out files that are identical to .smil files,
but with a .php extension. I wrote a bash script which picks up the .php
file from /tmp, extracts the "right" rtsp://  URL, and passes it to 
realplay. IMO MPR at al is just dumb, lots of complaints about this out
there. End-user thinks I'm just brilliant, I'll do little to disabuse him
of this obvious mistake.
