I recommend setting up an IMAP server and always accessing your mail via
IMAP;  avoid all the mail-store-file-format madness, what supports what
and what doesn't.

Most stock mail utils only do mbox.  I haven't seen a mail/mailx clone
that supports maildir,  although there might be one out there somewhere.
