I assume you are looking for an IDE based CD-ROM and not SCSI. Most should
work.

I remember one manufacturer publicly stated that they do not test their CD
drives with Linux... after someone used it with Linux and for some reason the
drive self districts - probably something about running the CD ROM head beyond
its end limit.

Aside from that, Sony drives are very good, Samsung makes very nice combo
drives supporting CDRW and DVD in read mode.

On the BAD LIST, do NOT get a Memorex or USDrives drive. I've had problems with
both of those. For example, the USDrives would not read single session CD-RW
disks though the outside of the box said it would read CD-RW drives
