Now, the difference between an lin/winmodem and a real modem is that a 
winmodem is lobotomized by having basic modem functionality removed and as a 
result shunts much of the data conversion between analog (phone-line) to 
digital (computer) to your computer via the drivers, which sucks CPU cycles 
and degrades overall connection performance.

Thus, they are junk.  IIRC, a "good" modem ought to be Hayes compatible.
