You know, I have used a couple of modems with linux, (so my experience is narrow) but I've never had a problem using a lucent winmodem. There are drivers readily available and it worked great (until it was fried by an electrical storm) with a couple of different distributions. I think for 90% of folks, cpu cycles are not in short supply. Jon
