Sure.  Look at the file in single-user mode, its format is easy.

You were keeping backups, right?  Burn a backup copy of /etc from
before the corruption started onto a CD, boot into single-user mode
and mount the CD, and diff them.

What went wrong was that SCSI card.  Everything after that is
forensic analysis, and every murder scene looks different so I don't
think you'll learn much.  So... what brand was that card?
