Now, I wouldn't exactly say that. The 2.4.x, and probably before
though I can't recall, has read-only support for NTFS in stable
condition. The 2.6.8 kernel that I am running now has NTFS ro, and rw
in stable [though, the rw is a bit of a pain, as the filesize can't
change, and you must open the file "write" no "append"]. I have to
say though, I don't like mounting any foreign file system, not even vfat.

yeah, backing up your data, always a good idea, if you can.
I'd suggest knoppix, I don't know where my disk is currently, but if I
recall it loaded my XP drive just fine [read-only].
