I think you have to use JavaScript to have the image change on click (i.e.,
have two images and when you click the link the image changes). I'll send
you a little program from my JavaScript textbook that does the image
switching (it's fancier than you need but you can extract what you need and
see if it can combine with an <A> tag for the link.

I'm using images for links in a webpage.  Is there any way to change the 
  image after it has been visited.  (Not unlike the visited link color 
change.)
