My wife's iBook has gone bonkers. It seems to be running but all I get is a
grey or blue screen. (I was able once to get a screen as single user and to
a checkdisk, which claimed that the disk was OK. I wasn't able to get a good
screen again as single user.)

Before I take it in to CompUSA in GR for repairs I want to try to use my
RedHat 8.0 Linux program to back up its partitions (one OS X and one 9.2).
Can I just plug it into the Linux box with a crossover cable and will Red
Hat mount it? If not, is there a way to do this?
