I'm a big fan of my Sonicblue (formerly S3, formerly Diamond Multimedia, 
etc, etc) Rio Karma.  It's a 20 gig HD-based player similar in size to 
the ipod, but a little cheaper and with a better control system.  I 
don't think there's a Linux driver to sync it with USB, but the docking 
station has an Ethernet port.  When docked, the Karma will get a DHCP 
address and serve a java version of its management software from a mini 
web server.  I've fired it up on my SuSE 9.2 box and it seems to work 
fine.  There are some rather annoying design decisions (doesn't work as 
a USB hard drive, makes a distinction between "files" and "music"), and 
100 Mb Ethernet is slower than USB, but it's still a great little box.
