[KLUG Members] RE: Routing without routing

Bob,

Unless your ISP changed the router pushing IP packets to your static IP
address, your gateway to their network would not change. They can assign you
a new static IP and stop routing packets for the old static IP through your
current gateway, but more than likely your gateway address to their network
will stay the same. My last ISP kept all their static IP addresses on one
router.

Your ISP gave you a gift with a three day notice.

I just went through a three day ordeal from a circumstance similar to you,
but the incident was much less pleasant. I had to switch ISP's without any
notice. Bad went to worse when the new ISP insisted I do DHCP to get my
static IP. My firewall scripts were going off before the interfaces came up.
Chaos reigned in the IPChains. To top things off, our modems were battling
against each other and my ping to the ppp peer would quickly degrade to
3000-5000ms. They offered to rent me a router for $10/month, but then they
showed up with a single interface router. Email is going through now, but I
lost my DMZ.

I need to reconfigure my LRP box as a three interface router and have them
reconfigure their router so I can get my SMTP server back into a DMZ.

All in all, not a very pleasant experience. Not only did things not meet
expectations, they failed miserably.

But I'm happy for your pleasant experience.

Regards,

Bob
