After I burned myself on this, I thought I would post to the group: a
while ago, we were talking about Firebird/Firefox as a replacement for
Galeon. After I downloaded the Firefox tar.gz binary directly from
Mozilla's home page, I discovered that it was linked to GTK+ 1.2 -- no
AA, XFT, XRender, fontconfig, &c.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/#new lists the two
versions for Linux, GTK and GTK2+XFT. Get the latter. ;-)
