You downloaded the binary tar file.  We were talking about the source
code tar files.

Binary tar files aren't too bad because they normally untar everything
in one subdirectory, and it's not to bad to get rid of when the next
version comes along or you don't like it.

One other advantage of RPM's is they (in this case anyway) add the
program to the Gnome/KDE menus.  Binary tar files usually don't.
