Mine is a ThinkPad T30 with Debian/WinXP dual boot, also 1400x1050. 
I'm happy to share info if you have specific questions;  just ask. 
And if you get sound working, tell me how, I'm stuck on that.

As of a few months ago, Debian doesn't do that... sounds like a neat
feature.
