I don't know the answers to your questions, and I realize you're having
all kinds of fun making your own 2.6 kernel....  :-) 

But when you get tired of the problems and just want it to work, you can
download unofficial 2.6 kernel RPM's for 9.0 built by a SuSE employee. 
He also has RPM upgrades for the other packages required by 2.6.
