memcached is a high-performance, distributed RAM key-value
cachingsystem. That buzzword soup means that if you have one or
morespare machines with some free RAM, you can implement anon-persistent
data store that's simple and _extremely_ fast (itnever blocks, and it
scales to almost any size). It's mostlyintended for taking some of the
load off heavily-read databases, but if you have a simple project where
different processes need toshare data, it works great as a "database
lite." It has clientAPIs in Perl, PHP, Python, and Java. memcached is
co-written by the main guy at LiveJournal.com, whereit helps webheads
serve 20 million pages a day, reducing thatsite's database load "to
almost nothing." We're using it onSlashdot too, and it helped get us
under 10 queries a page. And,it's simple to set up.
