Actually I don't think it is acpi. If I take out the acpi=off option in 
the grub Failsafe mode I still get the machine to boot fine. I think it 
might be some other option in the menu.lst. Once I get a chance to get 
back on the machine I plane on looking up each of those options.

Yep, /dev/input/mice got the touchpad going great.
