Pre-XFree86 core breakup:

Hear from Havoc Pennington, Kieth Packard, Jim Gettys and others on
future enhancements, and the takeup of past ones, to XFree86. Of note: a
proposed Hardware Abstraction Layer (shades of NT!) daemon, hald, which
will examine and present devices in the system, such as your digital
camera, dropping an appropriate icon on your desktop for access.  This
system will complement sysfs and hotplug/udev.
