However, with things like PCMCIA/PC Card, Cardbus, USB, Firewire, and 
other Hot Swap-able devices you can stop the device. With your cardbus CD 
as an example: if you wanted to eject your card while the computer was 
running it would be "unsafe" to just pop the card out [and in windows you 
get yelled at for doing so]. To "safely" remove the card issue the command

cardctl eject

man cardctl for more information. What this does is to power down the 
card. I have never had a problem with the hardware after someone has just 
popped it out, but I have heard about, a while ago, card that, when popped 
out without power down, would burn out with the possibility of harm to the 
system as well.

And hey, it can't hurt to play it safe, right?
