Most distro can install PostgreSQL or MySQL,  which for smallish simple apps are
fundamentally the same.  Use Open Office to build interfaces,  it supports
forms, etc...  Just setup a connection via ODBC.  Both OOo books I've seen at
Barnes & Nobles spend a fair amount of pages covering data access via OOo.
