Learning a new GUI is simple if you know what is going on in the 
background.  I have to agree, though, that SQL is portable.   I have 
run into problems here and there at times with DB's that don't support 
this and that function . . . but nothing I could not figure out.

The problem is that it may be faster for you but other people might not 
quite be as proficient with SQL as you.  The aesthetic realm  has to be 
considered.
