Check out this program:

http://mysql-cocoa.sourceforge.net/

It is a great GUI on the OS X platform for creating and maintaining
mysql dbs . . . of course, it is no substitute for knowing sql.

Also, I have been working on moving FileMaker to mysql. The biggest
problem I have is making an acceptable user interface. I designed the
original FileMaker for my company so there is not a problem of it being
irrational (or at least not to me :) I went with FileMaker at the time
because I needed something fast.

You can also pick up some good books a b&n on php and mysql.

One question I have though, is where can I find info on creating a text
based data entry system based on mysql without forcing the users to
learn sql? Right now I use php and mysql but it is really slow for
people in China and Germany who are still using dial up. (I don't mean
to hijack this thread, it seems relevant. If not, I can start a new
one)
