On a console login this is the 'login' [/bin/login] process.  I don't
believe this is possible;  'login' is by design a very simple and
straight-forward program.  (And of couse this is a bad idea in general).

GDM (GNOME Display Manager) does this by default I think; but can be set
either way.  If I recall correctly xdm takes the "show nothing" route
like 'login' does although it is almost certainly configurable.
