You will not NEED a special version. The AMD64's run x86 software just fine.

You will need to be careful about your drive controllers though. I have a
system with a Via and a Promise RAID SATA controller. Neither is actually
set up to run as a RAID, but I haven't had any luck getting those controllers
to work under Linux. FYI: It's an ASUS KV8 MOBO. Other MOBOs with SATA
RAID controllers ARE supported under Linux, I just made a bad assumption and
chose the wrong board. My bad.

I have not tried any of the AMD64-specific distros yet. I have seen that
Mandrake, Suse and Fedora each have AMD64 ISOs for their distros, but I
haven't bothered to download any and probably won't until I can determine if
my drive controllers will be supported.

I've considered forgoing installing Linux on my SATA drives and using the
regular IDE controllers just for Linux, leaving the SATA drives for gaming in
Windows. Huge waste of the SATA tech and the drive space, but until I can
get those controllers to work, I'm kinda SOL.
